Hello Zinfandel Lovers,
Tasting barrel samples is hard on even the most experienced wine merchant, but I can be honest with you, the 2015 Day, Zinfandel, Sonoma County is going to be a star. Even in a difficult vintage and only in the bottle for a 5 days before I got to taste, it showed it has the stuffing to become an icon in vintages to follow. This Zin is the first release from Ehren Jordan, the famous wine-maker of the renowned Turley Zinfandels and the owner of the highly regarded Failla wines. Soon to follow this release are the single vineyard Zinfandel....not to be missed. Coming soon to TTW (late October). You can only find Day Zinfandel locally at Top Ten Wines. Cost?...Roughy $30.
Notes from the winery....
"2015 Zinfandel This wine is blend of vineyards spanning the Russian River Valley, Dry Creek and Alexander Valley. Intense, inky purple in the glass, deeply floral with heady notes of pink peppercorn on the nose. Vibrantly fresh on the palate, the wine is packed with blackberry, boysenberry and is held taut by a firm graphite structure.
With Zinfandel roots dating back to the 1850’s, Sonoma County is the perfect place for Ehren to dive back into Zinfandel. His deep understanding of the micro-climates and long history of farming in the region, matched with his encyclopedic knowledge of everything Zinfandel practically destined him for this new project to take shape.
The 2015 Vintage was extraordinary for a number of reasons. Four years into a drought, vine stress among these old head trained vines was intense. The vintage was early and compact with more even-ripening than is typical for the variety. This provided us with tremendously fresh, healthy and concentrated fruit- leaving us with blessed little to do in the cellar.
With Zinfandel roots dating back to the 1990’s, Ehren Jordan is a true vigneron, with decades of experience in the cellars and vineyards of the Rhone Valley, Paso Robles, Sonoma County, Napa Valley and beyond. His obsessive hands-on farming practices and minimalist hands-off winemaking approach come through in every bottle- allowing site, variety and vintage to shine through."
